Should I Hire a Graphic Designer or Build My Own Logo?

With AI logo generators, Canva and freelance marketplaces more accessible than ever, creating your own logo has never been easier. But just because you can build your own logo, does that mean you should?

The honest answer is… it depends.

Should I Hire a Designer

As a branding designer, I don’t believe every business should invest thousands into a logo. In fact, there are plenty of situations where creating something yourself is the right decision. The important thing is understanding what your logo needs to achieve and whether it’s built to support where your business is going.

When a DIY Logo Is Enough

If you’re starting a side hustle or testing a business idea, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend spending a large budget on branding straight away. At that stage, validating your idea is far more important than having the perfect identity. A simple, well-presented logo is often enough to get you moving.

Where professional branding becomes valuable is when you’re building a business for the long term. If you want to stand out, appear credible and create a memorable first impression, your brand starts becoming one of your biggest business assets.

Think of it like your logo should almost be another employee in your business. It should work hard every day by creating recognition, building trust and encouraging people to find out more about what you do.

A Logo Isn’t Your Brand

One of the biggest misconceptions I come across is that a logo simply has to look nice.

Looking good certainly helps, but that’s only part of its job.

I like to compare branding to a house. Your logo is the front of the house. It needs to be inviting enough that people want to walk through the front door. Once they’re inside, that’s where the real experience begins. The colours, typography, imagery, website, social media and printed materials all work together to create the personality of your business. That’s your brand identity.

A logo isn’t your brand. It’s the beginning of it.

Building a Brand That Grows With You

Throughout my career I’ve seen businesses come to us after creating a logo themselves or using AI or a low-cost freelancer. The logo often isn’t terrible, but it doesn’t quite represent who they’ve become. It’s not distinctive enough, it doesn’t communicate their personality and it isn’t flexible enough to grow with the business.

Sometimes we completely redesign the identity. Other times we simply refine what’s already there by improving the typography, simplifying the icon and building a stronger visual language around it. The biggest transformation usually isn’t the logo itself, but everything that supports it.

It’s also important to think beyond today. A logo might look great on a white background, but will it still work on your website? On social media? Printed on merchandise? At exhibition scale? Does it have an icon version? Will it still represent your business in five years’ time?

These are the kinds of questions experienced designers think about from the very beginning. We’re not only designing for where your business is today, but where it could be tomorrow.

Real Brands, Real Impact

One project that always comes to mind is London Social Ventures. They approached us with no existing identity or website and wanted to launch a new organisation supporting businesses creating social impact.

Together we created a logo that combined the River Thames with the initials LSV into one recognisable mark. At their pilot showcase event it was brilliant to hear people talking about the identity without us prompting them. They loved how clever and memorable it was. More importantly, the branding gave the organisation a professional platform to communicate its purpose and build recognition from day one.

Another example is Lloyd’s Veterans Charity. The brief was to modernise a charity whose history stretches back over 200 years. Rather than chasing design trends, we focused on timeless values such as service, patriotism and community. Those ideas became a simple logo that was then supported by a wider visual language, creating something that felt both modern and respectful of its heritage.

To me, that’s what makes branding memorable. It’s not about following trends. It’s about creating an idea that people connect with.

So… Is Hiring a Graphic Designer Worth It?

If you’re simply testing an idea, perhaps not.

If you’re building a business you want people to remember, trust and grow with, then I genuinely believe it’s one of the best investments you can make.

That doesn’t mean choosing the most expensive agency or designer. It means choosing someone who takes the time to understand your business and, importantly, someone who’s honest enough to tell you when you don’t actually need a new logo. Sometimes the best investment isn’t a rebrand at all. It might be a better website, stronger marketing or improved customer experience instead.

Before you open an AI logo generator, I’d ask yourself one question:

Are you trying to create something quickly, or are you trying to build something that will represent your business for years to come?

Branding isn’t one-size-fits-all. It comes in all shapes and sizes, and the right solution depends on what you want your business to become.

In the end, how much you spend on a logo matters far less than whether it does its job. Does it resonate with your audience? Can it grow with your business? Are you proud to put it on everything you create?

If the answer is yes, then you’ve probably made the right decision.
