Google Analytics Chinese Traffic, What Happened? How to Fix it

If you’ve opened Google Analytics 4 recently and seen a sudden spike in traffic from China with almost 0-second sessions, you’re not alone.

Google Analytics Chinese Traffic, What Happened? How to Fix it

Many website owners have reported:

  • Huge jumps in Chinese visitors

  • Very high bounce rates

  • 0–1 second engagement time

  • Traffic showing as Direct / None

  • No matching visits in server logs

What’s Actually Happening?

In most cases, this isn’t real traffic.

It’s bot or “ghost” traffic being sent directly to GA4 using your public Measurement ID. That means:

  • It appears in Analytics

  • It inflates session numbers

  • But the visitor never actually landed on your site

Some automated crawlers and AI scrapers are also contributing to this pattern.

Why Does It Show 0 Seconds?

GA4 only counts engagement if someone:

  • Stays longer than 10 seconds

  • Scrolls

  • Clicks

  • Triggers another event

Bots don’t do that — so you get sessions with zero engagement time.

Is It a Security Issue?

Usually, no.

It doesn’t mean:

  • You’ve been hacked

  • Your SEO has dropped

  • Google has penalised you

It’s mainly an analytics reporting issue.

What Should You Do?

  • Check your server logs (to confirm it’s ghost traffic)

  • Create GA4 comparisons to exclude China or low engagement sessions

  • Focus on real traffic when reporting

The key thing: don’t panic — just filter your data properly so your reports stay accurate.

By combining strong SEO fundamentals with AEO and GEO strategies, your website is more likely to:

Appear in answer boxes

Be referenced in AI summaries

Build long-term authority

Maintain visibility as search evolves

SEO is no longer just about rankings.
